How Your Attitude Affects Your Exam More than How Smart You Are or How Much You Studied

Last Friday, Nov. 30, there was  super exciting news for me – I passed my final exam for my Chartered Accountant license. This has been a 2 year journey, consisting of 6 previous courses while I worked full time after I graduated.

In addition, this required taking 2 months off to study – Mondays through Friday from 9 to 5. It was a gruelling 3 day exam.

However, I passed not because I was the best accountant or knew the most accounting knowledge.

There are many who are smarter than me, who knew more than me, but some of them failed…WHY?

Find out in my complimentary training video on what you can do to ensure you pass your exam, that I used during my 3 day exam (5 hours consecutively each day) to help me pass.

Why your attitude actually plays a bigger part in how well you do on a test than how much you study or how smart you are…find out in my training video.

P.S. Please post any comments or questions – I will personally read these and respond to these.

Here’s to You Getting High Marks.

Read Faster and Memorize Easier from Your Textbooks

Reading faster and memorizing easier from your textbooks is a big problem for a lot of people.

When you first get your textbook to read – a lot of people simply try and read through everything, then try to remember everything, only to find that they fail miserably at it and can’t recall that much information. The reason is because if you try and read as well as memorize everything, that’s only going to work for recalling information if you have a photographic memory, which most people (including myself) don’t have.

Instead, what your teacher/professor will really test on are the main points. Before I go into the technique, I want to tie something into this to help you learn this technique…

Why do movies have commercials? It’s because it allows us to remember it easier so that we can determine if we want to watch it.The commercial has the main plot line or the main points of the movie.

Similarly, when you read through your textbooks, you should be on the look out for the main points first so that you know what you should be focused on for your tests.

That’s why, when you first get your textbook, you should start your reading by ONLY reading the following:

1. Headings

2. Sub-Headings

3. Titles of Tables, Figures, and Illustrations.

The reason is because all of these are the main points of that chapter. As such, it gives your brain a way to know the main points first. Then, any reading of the actual paragraphs of text will only be to serve more information of the main point.

Once you have finished going through your chapter and looking at only the headings, sub-headings, and titles – then you can do a second read of the actual text. At this time, because your brain knows what the important points are, your sub-concious will be reading through the textbook and recalling information only to support the main points – meaning you have less to memorize as opposed to the entire chapter. In addition, you may find yourself reading faster as well since your brain will know what the non-important information is as you’re reading through and you’ll simply ignore those sections.

The benefit of reading this way is that you actually read through the main points twice (once initially and once during the detailed reading of the textbook) – which’ll help you remember since people need to be exposed to the information a few times before they’ll memorize it.

Please let me know how well this technique works by posting comments below and feel free to share this with your friends and family to help them do better in school

Back to School Shopping Savings and Deals!

All the stores are talking about back to school shopping…

And I want to help you save even more on back to school shopping (up to 50%!) from the stores that you’re going to buy from anyways since I know what it’s like to be a student and to want to make sure you don’t go broke from back to school shopping.

That’s why I’ve created a video for you on how to save 2% to 50% off your back to school shopping:

1. Go to www.Shop.com/AngelaLinCgy – this is a site that does comparison shopping to give you the best deals on a specific product as it searches for the best pricing from a variety of online stores.

This is FREE to sign up – simply sign up by going to: http://bit.ly/RpbyJy

Even better, you can get what’s known as “cash back”. For example, if you have a 2% cash back, then when you buy $100, you’ll be able to get $2 back in cash. And the cash is a cheque paid to you so you can spend it on whatever you like, not specifically at the store that you’ve first got the cash back from.

2. Type in what you want to buy into the search bar and it’ll search through all of the stores that offer the product that you want.

3. You can narrow it down by stores, or price, so that you can get the cheapest price!  Then, you’ll be able to see how much you can get back in terms of cash for each product.

4. It also automatically searches through thousands of stores to provide you with a listing of the prices offered by the different stores so you can see which one has the cheapest pricing and the best cashback.

5. You can then check-out through the actual store (for example, if you are to buy from company ABC, you’ll actually go through the ABC site to order it), then, immediately, you’ll see your cash back balance added to your account when you log in.

6. Best part – you can invite your friends and family  in US, Canada, or Mexico so that they can sign up for free to save on back to school shopping (as well as other everyday products) – and you get 0.5% cash back of everything that they purchase in the future.

So get started now for free to save on your back to school shopping, get paid, and help your friends out while getting paid for your referrals – Visit www.Shop.com/AngelaLinCgy

Student Success Principles – 3 Easy Steps

Recently, I was inspired by an expert to create a video of 3 principles that I follow to help me reach success in life. Student success and also success in life is something that we’re constantly striving towards. Therefore, to help you reach success faster, you can take a look at my 3 principles that I follow and may give you some ideas for you:

Principle #1: In the morning when you wake up, think of 3 Things that you can help achieve which allows you to minimize your effort and maximize your results. Also, think of 3 people that you can help (whether that’s your classmate, friend, boss, family, or colleage) while still applying the minimum effort and maximum results rule. The reason is because if you help others, they’ll eventually return the help and karma will give you more opportunities in life to succeed.

Principle # 2: Be grateful for the small or simple things in life

A lot of times, we are too jaded and stop having as much fun or laughter in our life as we used to. Think back to when you were younger, what made you laugh or be happy? Why is it that just because you got older, you can’t laugh or be happy with the same thing? We always want more and more – and get stressed out in the process of achieving greater things – make sure you take the time to enjoy the simple things in life (such as blue sky, hanging out with friends, candy, a pretty flower, etc.)

Rule #3: Before you go to bed tonight, ask yourself, am I happy with what I’ve accomplished today? If no, what’s one thing that I can do right now to help me take a step closer to my success?

This should help you take at least one step closer every day to your success. Sometimes I’m super tired but even if just sending out one email reaching out to somebody will help me, I’ll do it if I haven’t done anything today to contribute to my success.

Let me know what you think by posting any comments or feedback. What are your 3 steps to success?

Writing Essays – How to Think Critically

A university student recently wrote in and asked:

“The problem is my writing skill is not good enough as a college student. When I am about to write I just can’t think on that topic, I can not put my thoughts in writing and also not good in organizing my information. Can you also please tell me how to think critically to write essay?”

What’s the 1 Main Point You’re Trying to Communicate?

For the essay that you have to write, I would suggest you start each essay by figuring out the 1 main point you are trying to get across.

What’s the 3 Strongest Supporting Argument for Your Main Point?

Once you’ve figured out the 1 main point, find 3 biggest points to support your main point so that the person can be persuaded to believe your main point. Then from there, you would find evidence or research material that would back up your 3 biggest points.

Get Examples for Each of Your Supporting Point

It’s important to have true examples to support your biggest points to increase persuasion. Once you have the outline of 1 main point, the 3 biggest persuasion points, and an example for each persuasion point after you do a bit of research, then find a friend who is doing well in that class.

Finally, get your friend to take a look and see if it makes sense in terms of critical thinking. This way, you can get some valuable feedback from your friend.

Or if you continue to have troubles, your college will typically have a writing center that can provide you with resources to improve your writing. So you can consider taking it to them for help.

What if English isn’t my first language?

If you’re like this student and English is not your first language, one quick suggestion is to first write on the topic in your native language as we can typically organize our thoughts better and get ideas on that topic.

Then, once you’ve done that, it should be easier for you to translate it into English.

Please comment or ask questions on whether this technique’s helped you with your studying. Also feel free to share additional essay writing tips!

Friends Keeping You Away from Higher Grades?

A university student recently wrote in and said:

A friend that I am very close we grew up together and I usually have the desire to always chill with him. This friend of mine is not a strong student in school and he is loves to waste time. (i.e meaning he has bad habits). This then rubs on me and I then start to slack off making it hard for me to stay focused on my school work.

How can I avoid this friend?”

The best way is to stary by thinking of the biggest consequences that would happen if you didn’t study.

And I mean BIG Consequences. Fear is a surprisingly useful motivator.

So think of things like… if you fail this exam, you may also fail class, meaning you have to re-take this class and pay $500+ to re-take that course again. Not only that, you will have to waste another few months to re-take the class. Or if you don’t fail but still do badly, this may end up in you not being able to find a job due to the bad grades so employers won’t even interview you. Think about these and use these to scare yourself into stopping procrastination.

Another suggestion is to get a friend who does study and set up a study time with the friend so that at least when you are tempted to just hang out with your friend who has bad study habits, but you have to meet your friend who does study, it’s a commitment that you make to yourself and will stop you from wasting more time.

Or if this really doesn’t work, you can always do it like they do in the movies, which is get somebody to give you a call to do something. This time, instead of avoiding a date that you’re trying to get out of… you’ll have an excuse to focus on your education. Get somebody to call you at a time that you want to study at – or even better, get your parents to give you a call. Then, tell your friend who doesn’t want to study that you have to go see another friend/parents are yelling, etc.

Please forward this to your friends if you find it helpful and post any comments/questions below regarding these techniques.

Speed Reading – Use Your Finger!

Start by taking any book that you haven’t read before, then take your finger (I prefer index) and start underlining each sentence, line by line. As you underline each sentence, have your eyes follow your finger. Move your finger as fast as you can across the page, under each line, while having your eyes follow it the whole time so that you are seeing the words.

Do this for 3 pages, going as fast as you can, underlining each sentence with your finger and having your eyes follow the sentence your finger’s underlining. The goal is not to comprehend what you are reading, but to simply have your eyes move as fast as you can. So it’s ok if the words that you’re reading with your eyes aren’t making any sense.

Now, after 3 pages of doing this, start by slowing down your finger to the point where you can read and understand the sentence you’re reading. You should now notice an increase in your reading speed.

Tip: You can continue underlining with your finger as this will help you read faster than if you are reading it without using your finger to underline. I’ve found this super helpful during my reading.
