Student Success Principles – 3 Easy Steps

Recently, I was inspired by an expert to create a video of 3 principles that I follow to help me reach success in life. Student success and also success in life is something that we’re constantly striving towards. Therefore, to help you reach success faster, you can take a look at my 3 principles that I follow and may give you some ideas for you:

Principle #1: In the morning when you wake up, think of 3 Things that you can help achieve which allows you to minimize your effort and maximize your results. Also, think of 3 people that you can help (whether that’s your classmate, friend, boss, family, or colleage) while still applying the minimum effort and maximum results rule. The reason is because if you help others, they’ll eventually return the help and karma will give you more opportunities in life to succeed.

Principle # 2: Be grateful for the small or simple things in life

A lot of times, we are too jaded and stop having as much fun or laughter in our life as we used to. Think back to when you were younger, what made you laugh or be happy? Why is it that just because you got older, you can’t laugh or be happy with the same thing? We always want more and more – and get stressed out in the process of achieving greater things – make sure you take the time to enjoy the simple things in life (such as blue sky, hanging out with friends, candy, a pretty flower, etc.)

Rule #3: Before you go to bed tonight, ask yourself, am I happy with what I’ve accomplished today? If no, what’s one thing that I can do right now to help me take a step closer to my success?

This should help you take at least one step closer every day to your success. Sometimes I’m super tired but even if just sending out one email reaching out to somebody will help me, I’ll do it if I haven’t done anything today to contribute to my success.

Let me know what you think by posting any comments or feedback. What are your 3 steps to success?

Writing Essays – How to Think Critically

A university student recently wrote in and asked:

“The problem is my writing skill is not good enough as a college student. When I am about to write I just can’t think on that topic, I can not put my thoughts in writing and also not good in organizing my information. Can you also please tell me how to think critically to write essay?”

What’s the 1 Main Point You’re Trying to Communicate?

For the essay that you have to write, I would suggest you start each essay by figuring out the 1 main point you are trying to get across.

What’s the 3 Strongest Supporting Argument for Your Main Point?

Once you’ve figured out the 1 main point, find 3 biggest points to support your main point so that the person can be persuaded to believe your main point. Then from there, you would find evidence or research material that would back up your 3 biggest points.

Get Examples for Each of Your Supporting Point

It’s important to have true examples to support your biggest points to increase persuasion. Once you have the outline of 1 main point, the 3 biggest persuasion points, and an example for each persuasion point after you do a bit of research, then find a friend who is doing well in that class.

Finally, get your friend to take a look and see if it makes sense in terms of critical thinking. This way, you can get some valuable feedback from your friend.

Or if you continue to have troubles, your college will typically have a writing center that can provide you with resources to improve your writing. So you can consider taking it to them for help.

What if English isn’t my first language?

If you’re like this student and English is not your first language, one quick suggestion is to first write on the topic in your native language as we can typically organize our thoughts better and get ideas on that topic.

Then, once you’ve done that, it should be easier for you to translate it into English.

Please comment or ask questions on whether this technique’s helped you with your studying. Also feel free to share additional essay writing tips!

Friends Keeping You Away from Higher Grades?

A university student recently wrote in and said:

A friend that I am very close we grew up together and I usually have the desire to always chill with him. This friend of mine is not a strong student in school and he is loves to waste time. (i.e meaning he has bad habits). This then rubs on me and I then start to slack off making it hard for me to stay focused on my school work.

How can I avoid this friend?”

The best way is to stary by thinking of the biggest consequences that would happen if you didn’t study.

And I mean BIG Consequences. Fear is a surprisingly useful motivator.

So think of things like… if you fail this exam, you may also fail class, meaning you have to re-take this class and pay $500+ to re-take that course again. Not only that, you will have to waste another few months to re-take the class. Or if you don’t fail but still do badly, this may end up in you not being able to find a job due to the bad grades so employers won’t even interview you. Think about these and use these to scare yourself into stopping procrastination.

Another suggestion is to get a friend who does study and set up a study time with the friend so that at least when you are tempted to just hang out with your friend who has bad study habits, but you have to meet your friend who does study, it’s a commitment that you make to yourself and will stop you from wasting more time.

Or if this really doesn’t work, you can always do it like they do in the movies, which is get somebody to give you a call to do something. This time, instead of avoiding a date that you’re trying to get out of… you’ll have an excuse to focus on your education. Get somebody to call you at a time that you want to study at – or even better, get your parents to give you a call. Then, tell your friend who doesn’t want to study that you have to go see another friend/parents are yelling, etc.

Please forward this to your friends if you find it helpful and post any comments/questions below regarding these techniques.

Speed Reading – Use Your Finger!

Start by taking any book that you haven’t read before, then take your finger (I prefer index) and start underlining each sentence, line by line. As you underline each sentence, have your eyes follow your finger. Move your finger as fast as you can across the page, under each line, while having your eyes follow it the whole time so that you are seeing the words.

Do this for 3 pages, going as fast as you can, underlining each sentence with your finger and having your eyes follow the sentence your finger’s underlining. The goal is not to comprehend what you are reading, but to simply have your eyes move as fast as you can. So it’s ok if the words that you’re reading with your eyes aren’t making any sense.

Now, after 3 pages of doing this, start by slowing down your finger to the point where you can read and understand the sentence you’re reading. You should now notice an increase in your reading speed.

Tip: You can continue underlining with your finger as this will help you read faster than if you are reading it without using your finger to underline. I’ve found this super helpful during my reading.

Can’t Memorize?

So it’s April Fool’s on April 1, 2011. And I was definitely fooled…by myself that is…

As I was about to get on the bus on April 1, I realized that my April bus pass is still sitting on my desk at home. This resulted in me having to go home to retrieve it and making me late by having to wait for the next bus (30 minutes later). This is similar to the student life, when you’ve studied a lot (like my April bus pass, which is ready for use) but when the test comes (like my bus arriving), you’ve forgotten what you studied.

However, sometimes you may be secretly sabotaging yourself without even knowing it. Have you ever thought that you can’t memorize the information necessary for an exam? If so, you should think again.

Studies have shown that up to 90% of your ability to learn is determined by your belief that you can (outside of any obvious physical handicaps – like brain missing).

Think about the things you “know” you can NOT learn. Way before you even tried to start memorizing, a mechanism in your brain has already shut off any possibility of you learning it. Now pick one thing you’ve been trying to memorize, but just can’t seem to. Hold that in your mind. Now start paying attention to what you’re saying to yourself. Are you saying, “I’ve been trying to memorize this, but it never works, maybe I’ll just give up”?

If so, I want you to approach the material with a new perspective. Pretend that it’s something you’ve never tried to memorize before. If you haven’t tried yet, how do you know you can’t memorize it? So, start by saying to yourself, “I know I can memorize this, I just know it!”

Remember this feeling next time you feel completely blocked off from taking in information for your next exam. Then ask yourself, “How can I believe in myself more so I can study this?”

Don’t Read Everything in One Sitting

Your short-term memory can only hold so much. Imagine having an empty water bottle. You need to fill it up. So you start pouring water into it. Most people know to stop filling it when the water bottle is almost full. Your brain is like the water bottle, although it does have a very large capacity, when you first read the material, your learning is stored in short term memory, which has limited capacity. Then, your brain needs to transfer that learning to long-term memory so that you’ll remember it later.

If you read a lot in one session, your short-term memory capacity will max out. Like the water bottle that overflows if you continue to fill it with water, if you try to read everything in one sitting, your brain will not have space to store all the things you learned because you’re throwing too much information at it! Then you wonder later why you don’t remember much even though you read so many pages! So if you try to read everything in one session, you will waste time and energy because:

  1. You read everything the first time
  2. Remember some parts but forget most of the other parts
  3. Need to re-read the parts you forget

That’s doing double the work! I don’t know about you, but I’m not that crazy about doing twice the work to get the same result.

So split up the required reading into many sessions to make sure you don’t max out your short-term memory for each session. Studies show that students who split up their reading into many sessions, compared to those who read everything in one session, actually take less time to read AND remember more!

Take Notes While Reading

You can choose to write down notes as you’re reading. This will help keep you engaged. If you come across important information that the teacher didn’t cover in class, you should write it down. If you don’t understand it, you should create a questions page. Once you have most of your questions then ask the teacher all your questions in one visit. It’ll save both you and the teacher time. Going to your teacher each time you have a question will not only waste time for the both of you, but your teacher may also become annoyed when you visit too frequently.

If you see additional information to supplement the class notes, you can also write that in your notes.

While you read the textbook, you can also see which questions can come from a particular paragraph. Then, write down the possible test question on the margin of the page or create a questions page along with where to find the answer in the textbook. This will help you study as you’ve already created possible test questions regarding the content. You’ve also noted down where to find the answer in case you forget.

What are your thoughts? Share them with us on your success or problem with taking notes.
